So the last 2 weeks under the guise of pushing men to seek direction in their lives, I have really been pushing the importance of relationship as the fuel that drives men in the right direction. That is relationships that follow this simple but profound truth… men will become godly men in the presence of other godly men!! Allow me to this week speak a little more straightforward on this!!
I am in the process of re-reading a book titled Men of Courage by Larry Crabb. I am privileged to be reading this in conjunction with getting to know 3 other men from the churches I serve as a Director of Discipleship. It is a great read for men in many ways… but one I have noted as I start into it is that the author doesn’t take too long into the book before getting into the action of it. I have read books before that spend so much time in setting up the story. Books that use a minutia of details that I tend to lose interest, and don’t even make it to the rest of the story. However, in this book Mr. Crabb brings us right in… and lays out before us the vision and challenge he has been given that could start a revolution in God’s church here on earth. Here is a small segment of that to give you a better idea of what I am referring to…
“My dream boils down to a sentence as simple as it is profound: If men become men the world will change.” (similarly he says “It is also true that if women become women, the world will change”) He goes on with the dream and says this… “ In my dream older men will father and younger men will brother. When men throughout the world recover their voice, release their power, and recapture the joy in following God’s call to become authentic men, the very nature of Christian community will change.” Larry Crabb from Men of Courage
The power he speaks of is the power that is in us… because of what God’s son has done and the indwelling work of His Spirit. God is already with us!! We don’t have to get closer to God… the power of Him in us is released as we love others. The power of the mentoring relationship, life on life, or life together is about others not about us getting closer to God. How are we loving those that God has already put in front of us!! It will require those of us who know Him and seek to do His will (be obedient) to see those He puts before us. And then let God work through our lives. It isn’t about the clever names we give this (mentoring, discipling etc…) or about the programs and systems we set up in our churches to answer the call… it is about answering the call to connect!!
