We have been on a two week journey as my mom transitioned from her time on this earth to her home in heaven!! As it was with my father over 17 years ago (even though the transition time was different), we as a family found more assurance of the road that leads to that place He has prepared for us (John 14:2)!! Even though this morning typically my mom would have walked over from her house two doors down to bring me the local paper and have a cup of coffee, I walked down to her house and grabbed that paper. The reminder of her not being there at first was a bit hard to swallow… but then that picture of her in that room reserved for her occupied that space and the idea of her life well done overwhelmed my thoughts of what that then means for me.
What does that picture of a road look like for you? In Matthew 7: 13 & 14 we are given this picture of that road…
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
One thing to note in this passage is that there are two distinct roads… and so as I picture that road it is filled with forks in the road. Every step of the journey on this road we are faced with decisions to make about which road to take. There is the way of management and control that has us heading towards where this world would have us go. But then there is also a road of abandonment and submission to the one who has paved the way to eternity with Him!!
I am thankful for the lives of my parents whose lives I can pull from when those forks in the road are before me. They have been huge influencers in helping me stay on that narrow road. That moment of their transition could have been filled with much sadness… and sure I have been missing fishing with my dad, and having mom just a couple doors down from us for our time back in her home town… those moments brought me even more assurance of where that narrow road leads!! Thank you mom and dad for a road well travelled!!!
How about you? and how about those around you? It is this privilege to not only walk that road to that place with many rooms, but also to walk it with others. How are we doing as His church in not only inviting people on that road? but also helping folks face those inevitable forks in the road?
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14: 3 & 4
